The stag beetle is in danger of attacks by a range of predators at all stages of its life. Here are some of its main predators:

Magpie (Pica pica)

Magpies prey on adult beetles. They have a very distinctive method of attack, biting off the fat-filled abdomen and leaving the rest of the beetle, including the wing-cases, fully intact. Unfortunately this doesn’t kill the beetle instantly, instead leaving it able to wander round helplessly for anything up to a few days before it finally dies.

Man (Homo sapiens)

Perhaps the beetle’s biggest enemy. Be it through clearing away rotting wood that is so crucial to the beetle’s life-cycle, accidentally running them over or even just stepping on them, humans pose a great threat to the stag beetle.
